1. The local government election held throughout the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom on Saturday October 5, 2024 is still generating interests and lively discussions.
The major attraction was the unexpected victory of the All Progressives Congress in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio’s home local council, a result that has stunned members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.
The APC candidate polled a total of 51,751 votes while the PDP candidate trailed behind with 22,799 votes.
2. An FCT High Court in Maitama has accepted the request of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to present two witnesses virtually in the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor Godwin Emefiele.
Justice Maryanne Anenih in a ruling on Thursday granted EFCC’s application in which it sought the court’s permission to be allowed to field the witnesses, who are currently abroad, through video link.
The EFCC is prosecuting Emefiele on a six-count charge of unlawfully printing of new naira notes, among others.
3. The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to urgently transmit the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance titled: “Ensures long term macro-economic stability of the national economy” by Reps member Clement Jimbo.
Leading the debate on the motion, Jimbo said that the MTEF if quickly submitted to the National Assembly will give members enough time to work on the 2025 Appropriation Bill.
4. The African Union (AU), has said Nigeria has the untapped rich marine resources in strategic location to be a leader in Africa’s blue economy.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the broad-based national stakeholders’ consultation, validation workshop and development of national blue economy strategy for the Federal Republic Of Nigeria In Abuja, the head of division, Blue economy, Africa Union, Mr. Georges Asseko said , “Nigeria, with its vast coastline, rich marine resources, and strategic location, is well-positioned to be a leader in Africa’s blue economy. This has been proven by the fast development of aquaculture value chains that make the country the second producer of aquaculture products per year.
5. The Senate on Thursday passed a vote of confidence on its President, Godswill Akpabio, and other principal officers of the Red Chamber.
This followed a Point of Order raised by the Senator from Yahaya Abdullahi, during plenary in Abuja.
He was reacting to the purported impeachment move against Akpabio.
Abdullahi, who raised the matter under personal explanation, drew the attention of the upper legislative chamber to a report on the purported impeachment of the Senate president.
He said: “It was reported that senators from the northern part of the country were plotting to impeach the leadership of the senate led by Akpabio.
