1. Death toll has risen to 153 with 100 people hospitalized in a tanker explosion in Majia local Government area of Jigawa State.
Arewa Times earlier reported that the death toll rose to 105, while 70 others sustained various degrees of injuries.
In a fresh statement, the police spokesman, DSP. Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the increase in the number of victims.
He said those that have lost their lives have been buried in a mass grave, while those injured were currently receiving medication at Aminu Kano, Jahun, Nguru, Hadejia, and Gumel hospitals.
2. A member of the Yoruba Nation agitators, Adejumo Lateef, has died in custody, while 27 others were arraigned at Court 3 of the Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday.
Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service informed the court of Lateef’s death when the suspects were brought for arraignment.
The deceased was the 18th defendant in a case between the Oyo State Government and the accused persons, who were operating under the aegis of Yoruba Nation agitators.
3. Tragedy struck Thursday morning in Benin City, the Edo State Capital following the explosion of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicle at NIPCO filling station located at Aduwawa along the Benin-Auchi Expressway.
In a viral video making round on social media, the vehicle was vividly scattered while people around the vicinity ran for dear lives as the loud sound from the explosion created panic among residents in the vicinity.
Three persons were said to have sustained various degrees of injuries and have been rushed to a private hospital for medical attention.
4. The National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has stated that a significant number of illicit weapons currently in circulation in Nigeria originally belonged to the Federal Government.
Ribadu stated this on Thursday, during the arms destruction exercise conducted by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Abuja.
He explained that the weapons ended up in the hands of non-state actors due to corrupt elements within the security agencies.
5. A bill seeking the creation of Ogoja State has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
The bill, sponsored by Godwin Offiono and three others during plenary.
The constitution alteration bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create an additional state in the South-south region.
Moving the motion, Mr Offiono said the “essence of this bill is rested on equity.”
If the bill is passed into law, it would bring the number of states in the South-south region to seven.
