US-Made Munition, JDAM Used By Israel In Beirut Deadly Strike – Report

A US-made weapon was utilized in an Israeli airstrike in a heavily populated area of Beirut on Thursday, resulting in at least 22 fatalities, according to findings from the UK newspaper The Guardian. This attack marked the deadliest incident in the capital since the onset of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel over a year ago.

The Guardian discovered remnants of a US-manufactured Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) among the rubble of a destroyed building.

The report explains that JDAMs are guidance kits produced by the US aerospace company Boeing, which can be attached to large unguided bombs weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kg), transforming them into GPS-guided munitions.

Richard Weir, a senior researcher in the conflict and arms division at Human Rights Watch and a former US military bomb technician, confirmed the identification of the weapon remnants. He stated, “The bolt pattern, its position, and the shape of the remnant are consistent with the tail fin of a US-made JDAM guidance kit for Mk80 series air-dropped munitions,” as quoted in the report.
