Tinubu Urges CAF To Sanction Libya Over Super Eagles’ Maltreatment

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his expectation that the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will carry out a comprehensive investigation and suggest suitable actions against Libya.

While welcoming the national team back to Nigeria, Tinubu stated that the Libyan authorities intentionally breached CAF’s statutes and regulations.

His comments were made through a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, shortly after the team returned home via Kano Airport.

Onanuga mentioned that President Tinubu was deeply affected by the mistreatment the Super Eagles faced at a Libyan airport and warmly welcomed their safe return.

He confirmed that the distressing experience led the Nigerian Football Federation to withdraw the Super Eagles from the upcoming match on Tuesday.

“The President praises the effective collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in addressing this unfortunate incident and ensuring the players’ safe return.

“President Tinubu commends the players for maintaining their spirit despite the difficult ordeal in Libya. He acknowledges football’s ability to unite nations and people, viewing the treatment of our citizens as unsportsmanlike and inhumane, which starkly contrasts with the spirit of the game he values.

“He passionately urges all football enthusiasts and administrators to come together and work cooperatively to prevent and address such incidents in the future,” Onanuga stated in the announcement.
