South Africa: Anti-Apartheid Boss Tito Mboweni Dies At The Age Of 65
President Cyril Ramaphosa mourns Mboweni’s passing saying he had sharp focus on fiscal discipline and economic transformation.
Tito Mboweni, a former anti-apartheid activist and key economic policymaker in South Africa, has passed away at the age of 65 after a short illness, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday evening.
In a statement, President Ramaphosa expressed, “We have lost a leader and fellow citizen who dedicated his life to our country as an activist, innovator in economic policy, and advocate for labor rights.”
Mboweni served as South Africa’s first Black central bank governor from 1999 to 2009 and later held the position of finance minister from 2018 to 2021 under Ramaphosa, where he was instrumental in fiscal reform and economic change.
