1. Nigeria’s Super Eagles have threatened to boycott the second leg of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.
This followed alleged maltreatment of the Nigeria’s contingent for the match by the Libyan government officials who kept and refused to clear the entire team at the Al Abaq Airport, 12 hours after they landed.
A statement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday morning read: “Super Eagles still at Al Abraq Airport 12 hours after landing in Libya.
2. The Federal Government is set to rev up the war against insurgents and other criminal elements with 34 fighter jets.
Already, a team of experts headed by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, is in Italy finalising the procurement process.
The Air Marshal Abubakar-led team is made up of officials of the Ministries of Defence and Finance who participated in a Programme Management Review Meeting with Messrs Leonardo S.p.A in Rome.
On the list are 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters.
3. A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Bauchi State, Sunusi Takko, has lashed out at former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, for his open criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Takko, who served in the defunct 2023 APC Presidential Campaign Council, described Amaechi’s criticisms of Tinubu as unpatriotic and advised him to recover from losing the APC presidential ticket to Tinubu in 2022.
Amaechi had, in a recent interview, decried the economy hardship in the country, wondering why youths are not on the street protesting against the Tinubu government.
But in a statement on Sunday, Takko took on Amaechi over his suggestion of mass protest against the government, wondering if Amaechi had yet to recover from losing the APC presidential ticket to Tinubu in 2023.
4. The National Assembly is considering a bill proposing an increase in the Value-Added Tax, VAT, from 7.5 percent to 10 percent.
In the executive bill seen by TheCable, yesterday, the National Assembly intends raising the tax rate to 10 percent by 2025.
The legislature also intends to increase the VAT to 12.5 percent by 2026 through 2029, according to the document.
Recall that on May 8, 2024, chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, had said the VAT rate needs to be increased.
5. Segun Odegbami, a close friend of Fregene and ex-international, broke the news in a heartfelt Facebook post on Sunday night.
Odegbami said the Nigerian football legend died in the presence of Tina, his wife, and two of his children after a protracted illness.
The 72-year-old former striker who recently solicited financial assistance for Fregene, 77, expressed gratitude to those who supported the ex-goalkeeper during his illness.
“And the Man died. A few minutes ago, Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, OLY, former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, who has been on life-support for the past one week, passed on to meet his Creator,” he wrote.
“He died quietly in the presence of two of his children and his devoted wife, Tina.
