Kenya Lawmakers Set To Impeaching Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

Kenyan lawmakers are set to vote on the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who faces accusations of corruption and undermining the government, among other charges.

Gachagua has denied the allegations and plans to defend himself in parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

“I am innocent of all these charges,” he stated in a televised address late Monday, refuting claims that he has accumulated a significant amount of unexplained property and has encouraged “ethnic balkanisation.”

“I have no intention of resigning from this position. I will fight until the end,” Gachagua declared.

The impeachment process was initiated on October 1, with 291 MPs supporting the motion, far exceeding the required minimum of 117.

If the National Assembly votes to impeach with a two-thirds majority, the Senate will then be asked to confirm the motion with the same level of support.
