Hardship Under Tinubu Govt Fueling Mental Health Problem – Peter Obi

Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed that the deteriorating economic conditions under President Bola Tinubu’s administration are contributing to an increase in mental health issues, among other factors.

Obi, who previously served as the governor of Anambra State, made this statement in his message as Nigeria observed World Mental Health Day on Thursday alongside the global community.

In a post on his X account, the LP’s presidential candidate from the 2023 general elections emphasized that mental health is a significant health concern in Nigeria that is not receiving the attention it requires.

He noted with concern that the number of suicide cases in the country, driven by anxiety and depression, continues to rise.

“In Nigeria, mental health is one of the critical health issues that is not receiving the necessary attention it deserves.

“The worsening economic conditions caused by hunger, poverty, and income inequality, along with other socio-political challenges facing the nation, have led to an increasing prevalence of mental health issues.

“The National Institute of Health reports that approximately 40 to 60 million Nigerians are affected by various mental health disorders,” Obi stated.
