Don’t Rule Out Atiku’s Presidential Ambitions In 2027 – Momodu To Critics

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, there is speculation about former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s possible seventh run for the presidency.

Dele Momodu, a former presidential candidate himself, expressed his views on Atiku’s political future on Monday, stating that only God and fate will shape his journey.

At 77, Atiku has attempted to secure the presidency six times without success, beginning with his 1993 bid in the Social Democratic Party primaries, where he lost to Moshood Abiola and Baba Gana Kingibe. While there are concerns regarding his health and fitness, Momodu argues that age should not be a determining factor in political eligibility.

“What impact have these younger politicians had?” Momodu asked during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. “Look at their states and see what they have accomplished with the resources available to them. Age should not automatically qualify or disqualify someone in politics.”

He compared Atiku’s situation to that of Joe Biden, who many did not expect to succeed Barack Obama. “It’s all in God’s hands and destiny,” he remarked. “I believe in destiny, which brings me peace. If Alhaji Atiku chooses to run, I wish him well. If he decides not to, that’s fine too.”

When asked if Atiku could pose a threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, Momodu took a neutral stance. “I’m sure some believe he is a significant contender. He could be a threat if he manages to rally a major political party behind him.”

Momodu also reminisced about the 2015 election, where Muhammadu Buhari was selected as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate due to his perceived ability to unify the northern region.

These remarks follow former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose’s suggestion that Atiku should abandon his presidential aspirations due to his age.
