The Zamfara State Government has strongly denied viral claims suggesting that a young woman, Zainab Muhamadu, is currently undergoing trial in a Sharia court for converting from Islam to Christianity.
Lately, social media and various blogs have been awash with reports alleging that the 22-year-old is due to appear before a Sharia court in Zamfara on Friday to face charges linked to her change of faith. These reports have triggered public outrage and fears of possible religious discrimination.
But in an official statement issued by the spokesperson to Governor Dauda Lawal, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the government labelled the reports as “false, mischievous, and dangerous.”
According to him, the story is rooted in baseless and unverified online posts intended to sow religious discord and mislead the general public.
“The attention of the Zamfara State Government has been drawn to mischievous fake news circulating about a 22-year-old Miss Zainab Muhamadu, who is facing the death penalty for converting to Christianity,” the statement noted.
“We want to categorically state that it is the handiwork of enemies of peace who are hellbent on creating tension where there is none.”
