Nathalie Ross, a Canadian tourist, reportedly suffered the loss of both hands in a shark encounter while attempting to take a photograph with the animal.
The incident took place on February 7 around 10:30 a.m. at Thompson’s Cove Beach in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Ross’s husband intervened to protect her from the shark before she was brought ashore.
Graphic images depict her on the beach receiving aid to stop the bleeding. Ross also sustained a bite on her thigh and was promptly airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
She is expected to recover. Reports indicate that the shark, approximately six feet long, has not been identified by species. Ross had approached the shark in shallow waters for photography purposes before the attack.
Following the incident, the beach was temporarily closed until February 9 as authorities confirmed the shark had moved to deeper waters.
Video footage emerged showing a shark near the attack site. The waters in the region are known to harbor various shark types, including tiger sharks, bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, and reef sharks.
This incident follows a recent fatal shark attack in Australia where a teenager was killed while swimming off Bribie Island, Queensland.
