On May 5, 2025, AY honoured an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he answered questions about the spraying of local and foreign currencies at a recent event—an act considered unlawful under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act.
Sharing his experience on Instagram, the comedian explained that he was cleared after authorities confirmed that the money used was not tied to any criminal activity. Expressing gratitude, he described the entire process as a learning opportunity and promised to help spread awareness about currency respect.
AY reminded Nigerians that mishandling the naira—be it through spraying, defacing, or any form of abuse—is not just a cultural habit but a legal offence that weakens the nation’s financial image. He called for everyone to treat the naira as a symbol of national identity and pride.
A Growing Concern Over Naira Misuse
Other celebrities are also under scrutiny. Actress Iyabo Ojo was contacted by the EFCC while abroad and faced questioning related to her daughter’s elaborate wedding celebrations.
Both public figures have since promised to support efforts in educating the public on respecting the naira.

Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, backs the EFCC’s actions, prohibiting any form of abuse towards the naira.
