A terrible accident happened when the roof of Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, fell down, killing more than 100 people. The search for survivors is still going on.
The collapse happened on the morning of April 8, about an hour after a concert began. Popular singer Rubby Pérez was performing when it happened.
Videos online show parts of the roof falling before the whole building came down, as people started to move away. At least 124 people have died, and over 255 have been hurt, according to reports.
Some of the Victims Named
Officials and family members have named some of the people who died. Two of them were well-known baseball players: MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and Dominican player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.
Nelsy Cruz, sister of MLB star Nelson Cruz and governor of Montecristi province, reportedly called the president from under the rubble, but later died in the hospital.
Singer Rubby Pérez was also found dead after the collapse. Saxophonist Luis Solis also died, along with some Venezuelan bartenders, an army captain, and employees of Grupo Popular, including a bank president and his wife.
Other victims include a doctor, an architect, a retired police officer, and the brother of a government official. So far, only 54 people have been identified.
What Officials Are Saying
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio shared condolences and said the U.S. is ready to help. He also confirmed that at least one American and some U.S. residents died.
Emergency leader Juan Manuel Méndez promised the search would continue nonstop. Senator Daniel Rivera said people must stay patient, as many are still missing.
President Luis Abinader announced three days of mourning and said all rescue teams are doing their best to help. He offered prayers for those affected.
What Families Are Saying
Dotel’s agent said he was full of life and will be missed. Kimberly Jones is still waiting for news about her missing niece, godson, and his friends who loved visiting the club.
Wilson Casado is also waiting for updates about his family members. Baseball legend Pedro Martinez said some of his family were there too and that he’s trying to stay strong during this sad time.
Club’s Statement
Jet Set nightclub shared a message saying they are heartbroken by what happened and are standing with the victims’ families. They promised to support them during this hard time.
Investigation Ongoing
Rescue teams are still looking for people in the rubble. An official investigation will soon begin to find out what caused the roof to fall.
