The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced a new plan that offers undocumented migrants a $1,000 travel allowance and assistance if they voluntarily return to their home country using the CBP Home App.
Launched on May 5, 2025, the aim of the program is to cut down on deportation expenses and encourage peaceful, voluntary exits for those staying in the U.S. without valid documents.
DHS described the offer as a “historic opportunity” for undocumented migrants to go back home in an organised and respectful way, while also receiving financial aid.
“Anyone who chooses to leave through the CBP Home App will get a $1,000 allowance after their return is confirmed through the app,” the department stated. “This is a safer and more respectful method compared to usual immigration enforcement, and it could lower deportation costs by as much as 70%. Currently, the government spends an average of $17,121 to detain and deport one undocumented migrant.”
This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce deportation-related government spending and ensure migrants return home in an orderly manner.
First Successful Return Recorded
DHS revealed that the first person to use the program was a migrant who had entered the U.S. during the Biden administration and has now returned to Honduras from Chicago with the program’s support.
The agency also mentioned that more migrants have already made plans to return home in the coming days.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called on qualified individuals to use the opportunity, saying it benefits both the migrants and the U.S. government.
“For undocumented individuals in the country, this program offers the safest and most convenient way to avoid being detained,” she said. “The CBP Home App provides access to travel support and helps ease pressure on our immigration system.”
She added that the program helps everyone involved and saves American taxpayers a lot of money.
How To Take Part
To join the program, migrants must send an “Intent to Depart” notice through the CBP Home App. Once their return is confirmed, they become qualified to receive the $1,000 stipend.
Also, those who sign up and show they are preparing to leave may be less likely to be arrested or detained during the process.
DHS further mentioned that individuals who successfully return home through this program may be considered for future legal entry into the United States.
