Kanu Nwankwo hails from Abia State and was born and raised in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

He started his football career in Nigeria, playing for a Nigeria League Federation Club before moving to Iwuanyanwu Nationale, where he secured the NPFL title in the 1992/93 season.

A few months later, he helped Nigeria clinch the 1993 FIFA U-17 Championship by defeating Ghana in the finals.

Following the tournament, he transferred to Holland to join Ajax Amsterdam, where he played alongside fellow Nigerian Finidi George.

Kanu gained widespread recognition for his outstanding performances at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, where Nigeria won the gold medal.

He has represented Nigeria in FIFA World Cups and AFCON tournaments.

Notably, he is the only Nigerian player to have won the CAF Best Player Award twice.
