Born in South Africa, he attended school in the United Kingdom, first at Harrow School and later at Christ Church, Oxford. He earned a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and also completed a Master’s at Oxford.
His grandfather served as Chairman of De Beers, the diamond mining giant, from the late 1920s. His father later succeeded him, and Nicky Oppenheimer eventually rose to the position of CEO.
He guided the company through a difficult economic period and led it to significant growth—business increased by over 50% during 2010. Alongside his work with De Beers, he also leads Greene and Partners Investments, a venture capital firm that supports business growth across South Africa and neighbouring regions.
