A devastating house fire in Brent, north-west London, has claimed the lives of a 43-year-old mother and her three children, aged 15, 8, and just 4 years old. Police have identified the victims as Nusrat Usman and her children — Maryam Mikaiel, 15, Musa Usman, 8, and Raees Usman, 4.
A woman in her 70s, also rescued from the scene and hospitalised, has now been discharged. However, a 13-year-old girl remains in critical condition.
Superintendent Steve Allen of the Metropolitan Police offered condolences to the bereaved family and expressed gratitude to emergency responders and the local community for their support. He confirmed that local officers are working with the Specialist Crime Command to investigate the complex incident.
“We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding,” he said, adding that a visible police presence will remain in the area. He also urged anyone with information to call 101 or speak directly to officers at the scene.
A 41-year-old man was arrested at the location in connection with the fire. He has since been released on bail and detained under the Mental Health Act.
The fire broke out in the early hours, prompting the response of eight fire engines and around 70 firefighters. Emergency crews rescued Nusrat and one of her children from the second floor and provided immediate treatment, but sadly, both passed away. Two other children were found inside the building and pronounced dead at the scene.
The blaze severely damaged two terraced houses, and fire crews managed to bring it under control by 3:24am. The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Photos from the aftermath show displaced residents standing outside the burnt structure, clutching suitcases and wrapped in coats as the community reels from the tragic loss.
