In Kogi State, Nigeria, Mama Janet Ekundayo, fondly known as “Mama Ekundayo,” devoted her life to caring for more than 500 orphans and abandoned children. In 1969, she founded the Ekundayo Children’s Home in Isanlu, creating a haven where these children could find love, shelter, and hope.

Her name, “Ekundayo,” meaning “my tears have turned to joy,” reflected her mission to bring happiness to those in need. Her selflessness earned her the title “Mother Theresa of Africa,” as she worked tirelessly to transform sorrow into joy for countless children.
Her story continues to inspire many, demonstrating the profound impact one person’s dedication can have. In 2003, Nigerian singer and photographer Toyin “TY” Bello met Mama Ekundayo, a moment that left a lasting impression on her. This encounter led TY Bello to compose the song Ekundayo, featured in her 2007 album Greenland, bringing national recognition to Mama Ekundayo’s remarkable service.
Mama Ekundayo’s deep faith and humility shone through in her daily life. She often expressed joy in her work, even without fully understanding why she was chosen for this mission.
