Lionel Messi has won the Copa America and Argentina, ending a 28-year history of failing to win a major trophy.

Argentina beat hosts Brazil on Saturday and won the Copa America, the first time the Barcelona star has won a trophy for his country.

Messi’s prowess has put an end to Argentina’s trophy-winning run, and he is thought to have won his seventh Ballon d’Or.

Anyone who wins the Copa America or the European Championship or the World Cup, and then plays for his club, is expected to win the Fifa World Player of the Year award.

The reason some believe Messi will receive the World Player of the Year award is that he has scored 38 goals and conceded 14 goals in 47 appearances this season.

The Barcelona captain also received the 26 player of the year award in 2021 for the best player award.

Messi won the Golden Boot at the top of the La Liga scoring charts, and was the first player to score four goals in the Copa America, then conceding five goals.

That means Messi, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner in history, was involved in 12 goals in Argentina’s Copa America.

After winning the Copa America in Brazil, even before the competition Messi took the Copa del Rey in Barcelona last season.
