How Airplanes Wingtip Lights Enhance Night-Time Flight Safety

Air travel is one of the safest modes of transportation, thanks in large part to a range of safety mechanisms and protocols. Among these, the use of wingtip lights plays a subtle but essential role in maintaining in-air awareness and avoiding accidents, especially during night-time operations. Wingtip lights, also known as navigation or position lights, are a critical feature on all modern aircraft. These lights are not just for aesthetics; they serve specific and vital safety functions.

Each wingtip is fitted with a distinct light colour to indicate the orientation of the aircraft. By international aviation standards, the right wing carries a green light, while the left wing is fitted with a red light. These colours allow pilots, air traffic controllers, and other aircraft operators to determine the direction another aircraft is heading, even in low visibility conditions such as night-time or poor weather.
