Google To Introduce New Theft Protection Features For Android Users

Google is enhancing security for Android by introducing a range of theft protection features. These additions come a few months after they were first announced and aim to give Android users better tools to prevent unauthorized access to their information.

The new anti-theft features have straightforward names: Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock, and they utilize AI technology. The rollout will occur gradually for Android users, and these features are compatible with devices running Android 10 or later, while Remote Lock requires at least Android 5. Users must ensure they have the latest version of Google Play Services and can find “Theft protection” in their device’s Settings app.

The Theft Detection Lock, for instance, employs AI, machine learning, and device sensors to identify typical movements associated with theft. If someone snatches a phone from its owner, the Theft Detection Lock will automatically secure the device, blocking access to apps and data to prevent the thief from using them.

This feature can detect sudden, jerky movements that suggest someone is forcibly taking the phone, whether on foot or in a vehicle, thereby reducing the risk of unauthorized data access.

The Offline Device Lock activates when a device remains offline for a prolonged period, which often happens during theft when thieves switch the device to Airplane mode. If the screen is locked while the device is disconnected, the thief cannot access the data, undermining the purpose of stealing the phone. Users need to be actively using their devices when unlocked, as the Offline Device Lock can lock the screen up to twice daily.

Lastly, the Remote Lock feature allows users to lock their devices remotely if they cannot access their Google account in emergencies. This is particularly useful if Find My Device is disabled and the user fears their device is lost or stolen, providing a quick way to safeguard personal data.
