China Outpaces Starlink With 10X Faster 100 Gbps Space-Ground Laser Transmission

China has set a new benchmark in satellite-to-ground laser communications, significantly outpacing Elon Musk’s Starlink network.

A team of engineers successfully achieved an unprecedented data transmission speed of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps), marking a tenfold increase over their previous record. This breakthrough was spearheaded by Chang Guang Satellite Technology, a key player in China’s space industry.

At the heart of this achievement is the Jilin-1 constellation, recognized as the world’s largest sub-meter commercial remote sensing satellite network. This advanced satellite fleet played a critical role in facilitating high-speed data transfer.

According to the South China Morning Post, the transmission occurred between a mobile, truck-based ground station and one of the 117 satellites orbiting Earth within the Jilin-1 network.
