In a significant twist in Nigeria’s political arena, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has openly affirmed the formation of a formidable opposition alliance comprising Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and himself. Their collective aim: to challenge and displace President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Addressing the gathering at the Arewa TechFest held in Katsina on Wednesday, El-Rufai stated unequivocally:
“Yesterday at 8 PM, there was a very important meeting of the coalition we’re putting together to ensure that President Tinubu goes back to Lagos.”
This confirmation follows a strategic meeting on Tuesday evening, where the alliance reportedly resolved to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their joint political platform.
A Formerly Divided House – Now in Unison?
The gravity of this partnership cannot be underestimated. In 2023, the split between Atiku and Obi was widely considered to have paved the way for Tinubu’s narrow triumph. Presently, it appears past political enmities have been set aside in favour of a collective ambition—a united opposition that bridges ethnic, regional, and ideological divisions.
“They came to the conclusion last night up till the early hours of this morning… all of them are working together now.”
El-Rufai also mentioned that certain competent ministers may be retained despite the coalition’s intent to bring change, singling out the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy:
“We will still keep Bosun Tijani because he is doing good work.”
Adc’s Role Formally Acknowledged
During a media interaction, Mani Ahmed, Chairman of the ADC’s Board of Trustees, officially confirmed the party’s role in the emerging alliance:
“I can categorically inform you that the African Democratic Congress is the coalition party in Nigeria. What remains is merely dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”
If this coalition stays intact, it could fundamentally transform the dynamics of the 2027 elections. Atiku brings political leverage from the North, Obi commands the youth and the Southeast vote, while El-Rufai adds a tactical edge to the mix—together posing a formidable challenge to the current administration.
However, skepticism persists among the public. Paul Ewedemi, a concerned citizen, remarked:
“I only pity Obi. Atiku plus Rufai are deception personified… it will be too late for him to bow out when Atiku refuses to let go in 8 years.”
